Halloween 2014 – Count Down Clock

Posted on:

Halloween is coming, time to get your decorations ready.  Okay, so my first prop this year is going to be a Halloween Count Down Clock.   It will have two arms, and 0 – 31 around the outside of the circle.  One hand will be constantly moving around, 3-4 RPM I think, and the other will be pointing to the days left until Halloween, starting with 31 and pointing to 0 on Halloween day.

Here is my original Idea.

I had some scrap 1/2″ particle board in my garage so I cut a circle out of that for the clock face.  I ended up making it 40″ diameter, I want it to be easy to read from the sidewalk.

Then I sprayed it with a flat black, I ended up giving it two coats because the particle board really sucked up the paint.

Here is the clock cut and sprayed, I decided to go with a jack-o-lantern face instead of a bat, mostly because making that yellow to orange gradient seemed like it would be hard to do right.

I’ll update this post as I make progress on the clock.

Melissa painted on a face and the numbers, while I cut some hands out of balsa wood. Then I added a AC motor to the back and we’ve got a Halloween count down clock.

The minute hand runs counter clockwise at 3-4 RPM and the day hand is held in place with a pushpin. Maybe next year I’ll figure out how to mechanically move the day hand.

Halloween 2014 – Circus / Carnival

Posted on:

So we decided to go with the Circus / Carnival theme.  Which means that I’ve got to start building.  This year our big props are going to be a big top off the front of my house, a circus wagon / cage, a light up sign, and a count down to Halloween clock.  I’ll keep you posted on how things are going.

Halloween 2014

Posted on:

Well, its August and that means its time to start thinking about Halloween for this year.  A few ideas that my wife and I had are…

  • Spooky Circus/ Carnival
    • Gypsy Caravan
    • Fortune teller
    • Orange and Black Tent
    • Freak Cage
  • Victorian Ghost Hunters
    • Graveyard
    • Steampunk ghost catching devices
    • Background story on Haunted House
    • Hearse Wagon
    • Gargoyles
  • Hansel and Gretel Candy Witch House
    • Candy House
    • Gingerbread Children
    • Large Book of Spells/Recipes
    • Large Cauldron
    • Candy-cane path markers

All of our Halloween props try to be clever and spooky but not gory. We get a lot of young trick or treaters and some are already to scared to come up to the house.
